The Rochester Warriors moved its practice to a new location at Astro Lanes in Madison Heights as they prepare for the new season.
Previously, the bowling team held practices at the IQ Bowling Center in Sterling Heights. However, Astro Lanes will provide the team with additional space needed for effective practices and competition.
“We needed space to get our practice time in,” said Coach Craig Woodham. “Astro Lanes gives us that extra room we’ve been looking for.” The team won’t have to worry about crowding or splitting practices. The IQ Bowling Center had eight lanes so the mens’ and womens’ bowling teams had to practice at separate times. Which caused players living on campus to miss dinner.
Besides the extra lanes, Woodham said the team is excited about this year’s seven recruits, who rounded the total roster to 30 bowlers. The recruits showed strong potential, with five making varsity, and the team is hopeful they will win the league championship in Feb. 2025.
Junior Nadia Yabs said, “With our recruits and more space to work on our game, we think this could finally be the year we take home the WHAC championship.”
Last year, Sara Richie, a sophomore, was rewarded with Newcomer of the Year and Bowler of the Year. The team has not won the championship yet but has always been a competitor in the league.
Sarah Temple a sophomore said, “There’s a lot of buzz around the team right now,” and, “But we know we have to stay focused and take it one game at a time.”
The team is eager to keep its momentum going, as its first tournament in Sept. got the Warriors off to a strong start. Two varsity women were in the top 30 for women’s singles, while the junior varsity women took third for teams.
