The Rochester College Warriors women’s basketball team has started its season off hot. The Warriors began with a pair of home games against Algoma University on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11.
The Warriors came out on top in the first battle against Algoma with a strong 79-51 win. Senior guard/forward Rio Dudgeon led the team on the offensive end with a team high 18 points on 6-10 shooting with four of those six baskets coming from behind the arc.
Senior guard/forward Rikki Scherdt was a pest on the defensive end, racking up three of Rochester’s 11 team steals. Other key players for the Warriors were junior guard/forward Devan Valko and senior forward Jade Smith, who scored 11 and 12 points respectively.
Rochester would come out on top again against Algoma. However, the second match-up was a much tighter game as the Warriors would only prevail with a 49-42 win. This time, the Warriors were led by senior guard Casey Bowdell, who racked up 11 points on 4-7 shooting.
Once again, Scherdt would lead Rochester on the defensive end as she totaled a game high 3 steals yet again. Unlike in the first matchup with Algoma, the bench was not much of a factor for the Warriors as only 11 points came from the reserves—8 from senior guard Kendra Kujat and 3 from freshman forward Olivia Farrell.
After being ranked 4th in the preseason coaches poll, the Warriors will look to build off of their early success and make a climb in the conference rankings. They will be back in action Oct. 13 at against St. Clair College as part of RC’s homecoming double header.
