Fans of FOX’s hit show “New Girl” are up in arms over Zooey Deschannel, the show’s star, being replaced by Megan Fox. Deschannel took a six-episode maternity leave for the beginning of season five, and the producers decided to throw Fox in the mix to shake things up.
"New Girl" Plot
The show typically focuses on Deschannel’s character, Jess, and her relationship with her three male roommates and best friend, Cece (Hannah Simone).
Deschannel's Maternity Leave Introduces Reagan
For Deschannel’s maternity leave, the producers decided to have Jess go on sequestered jury duty leaving her loftmates with an empty room for a little over a month. During that time, the guys decided to rent out Jess’s room.
Nick ended up meeting Fox’s character, Reagan, a beautiful pharmaceutical sales rep who comes to town on business, and immediately offers her the room.
Reagan has a personality that is a polar opposite to Jess’s bubbly, overenthusiastic demeanor. She immediately shakes things up in the loft by taking over Jess’s room and playing mind games with the guys in the loft.
Angry "New Girl" Fans
The show’s Instagram feed has become overrun with angry long-time fans who say that Fox is an undesirable character and doesn’t fit the normal mold of the show. Comments such as, “she’s ruining the show,” “bring Jess back,” “is Zooey ever coming back?” are just a few of the complaints that flood the feed on a daily basis.
Megan Fox Brings New Attitude To Show
Though the show would have been just as good if the plot focused on the guys and Cece during Jess’s absence, I think that Fox adds something extra to the show. Despite my not liking her as an actress, the fact that she is so different from Jess in her interactions with the other characters in the show makes the show more interesting and makes me excited for Jess’s return.
Thus far, we have found out that Reagan and Cece have previous experience with one another because they both went to the MTV beach house in the summer of 2003, and Reagan playfully teases Winston and Nick just to shake things up.
Zooey Deschannel Returns
So, to clear the air to any New Girl fans out there: Zooey Deschannel will be back on March 8. She is not off the show forever, and Megan Fox will leave upon her return.
New Girl is on every Tuesday at 8 p.m. on FOX and the first four seasons can be found on Netflix.
