CO2 levels in the atmosphere passed the 400 million parts per million benchmark in 2015 for the first time in recorded history and 2016 will be the first full year to exceed this CO2 benchmark the World Meteorological Organization reported. The WMO also reported that between 1900 and 2015 there was a 37% increase in radiative forcing or warming effect in the earth’s atmosphere due to the use of the greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide in agricultural and industrial activities. “Without tackling CO2 emissions, we cannot tackle climate change and keep temperatures increases to below 2 degrees C above the pre-industrial era,” WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said.

Iranian-American Robin Shahini, a 46-year-old graduate student from San Diego has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for “collaboration with a hostile government.”Shahini admitted he supported protests following Iran’s controversial 2009 election, but denies he has spied on the Iranian government. Analysts view his arrest as a plan by hard-liners in Iran’s security agencies to use detainees as a bargaining chip in future negotiations with the West. Shahini has not said if he will appeal the sentence, but he will protest the sentence. “I do a hunger strike-until either they free me or I die,” he said.

Christian refugees have left Mosul, Iraq in large numbers due to ISIS vandalizing churches and killing Christians. Many of the Christian refugees have escaped to Jordan living in churches in the city Amman with the hope of being granted asylum in countries outside of the Middle East. “They are trying to wipe out all our history. It is why they forced us out. But, they don’t know that in our hearts we will remain Iraqis, and our grandchildren will always say they are from Mosul,” Ann Danyale, a Christian refugee from Mosul said.
